How Social Security Benefits Are Calculated
Your Social Security benefit is based on your 35 highest-earning years, adjusted for inflation. The SSA calculates your Average Indexed Monthly Earnings (AIME) and applies a formula with bend points to determine your Primary Insurance Amount (PIA) — the benefit you receive at full retirement age (67 for those born after 1960).
The maximum monthly benefit at FRA in 2025 is $3,822. The average benefit is approximately $1,907/month.
Claiming Age Makes a Huge Difference
Age 62 (earliest): Your benefit is permanently reduced by up to 30%. A $2,000 FRA benefit becomes $1,400/month.
Age 67 (FRA): You receive your full calculated benefit — $2,000/month in this example.
Age 70 (maximum): You get delayed retirement credits of 8% per year. A $2,000 FRA benefit becomes $2,480/month — 24% more, permanently.
There is no benefit to waiting past age 70. The break-even point between claiming at 62 vs 67 is typically around age 78-80.
